Family Photo 1927 spacer Family Photo, 1927

This is a photo of me and my parents with my aunt and uncle at the Boardwalk in 1927.  I'm the little guy on my mother's lap, I was 6 years old at the time.  Check out the stove-pipe hat my Dad is wearing!

spacer Life at the Beach, 1956

I have a lot of fond memories of the Plunge.  My aunt, Shirley Wightman, was an aerialist in the water show with Don Patterson and a few others. My Uncle Skip (Littlefield) was Director of Entertainment, and a historian. I learned to swim from my aunt at the Plunge. We always went down to the beach after our chores were done.  My aunt would make our lunch and we would go down to meet Uncle Skip. There were lots of umbrellas that you don't see much anymore.

I remember the speed boat ride, and the old stage where they had the Miss California Contest. You would always see Uncle Skip announcing it. One of my favorite times was when my Gramma from San Jose came for the summer.  She would take us to the beach and ride the Merry-Go-Round every night for a month while she was here. Those days were great. On the weekends all us kids from school would meet at Cowells Beach or the river mouth, and play in the water and hang out. We had some great times. It was a peaceful time for all.

spacer Memories of my Mom, 1996

My mother and grandmother took my sister and I to the boardwalk for the first time in the early 70'. Her parents had taken her there many times while she was growning up in the 50's.  Being a rollar coaster fanatic, she took me on the Giant Dipper.  We rode many times.  After I grew up and had children of my own I started taking them to the Boardwalk once or twice a summer. My mom took each of my children on their first rides on the Dipper as soon as they were tall enough.  The last time we went with her was in 1996.  She was suffering from cancer of the spine and hips.  She rode the Dipper 3 times that day even though the movement was very painful in her condition.  She loved that ride.  We lost her that fall.  Eventually we moved out of state, but still return once every summer to enjoy the Boardwalk.  I always ride once alone in rememberance of that last day my mother rode the Dipper.

spacer Growing Up as a Local, 1968

I was born and raised in Santa Cruz and part of that means spending lots of time at the Boardwalk during the summer as a kid.  My brother and I, like every other young kid wanted to spend time with our friends at the Boardwalk all summer long.  My mom was a single mom and couldn't afford to buy our $3.00 wrist bands that often, so every morning we would wake up and try to figure out how to raise $3.00 each so we could have enough money to spend the entire day at the park.  We washed cars, mowed lawns and pulled weeds for that three-bucks.

Once we got there, the whole focus was the Giant dipper - we just called it the roller coaster.  We only wanted to sit in the front seat and forced each other to hold our hands up high going down the big hill.

When that got tiring or the line got too long, we would spend quality time in the Clown House on the spinning wheel or the moving bridge.

I only have good memories of the Boardwalk as a kid.  When i got a little older (mid-1970's) my step dad had a sail boat and the best day of the year was July 4th.  We would anchor off the boardwalk beach and watch the annual fireworks show right over our heads as we heard the many screams of joy from those at the Boardwalk watching the show from a very different angle.

I am so appreciative to the Seaside Company for keeping the memories and fun going every day possible.  My kids and grandkids now enjoy the Boardwalk and are building their own memories.
