Santa Cruz, 1963
We stayed in a motel just across the river from the beach. We had two rooms because we had a big family. I met a girl I went to school with there and when it was time for us to leave we begged my Mom to let me stay. I have been going to the Boardwalk as much a possible since, now with my kids and grandkids. Thanx Santa Cruz.

Candy Apples, 1974
I brought a candied apple to my dad. He asked for caramel, but I thought the red ones were prettier.
This is me on the beach, it's still my favorite place to be!

Baby Santa Cruz, 1978
When I was little we would come to Santa Cruz for a weekend as a fun vacation. One of my family members won a doll for me which from that day on was called Baby Santa Cruz. 30 years later and I still have it. I also remember eating the entire time I was there from taco's to ice cream dipped in chocolate. The Giant Dipper is a favorite ride that my husband and I just went on a week ago for the first time since we have had our own kids 9 years ago. Our kids love Santa Cruz too.

At the Beach, 1937
This is a p photograph of my mother Helen Tuttle (Fargo) and aunt
Elizabeth Tuttle (Smoot) taken at the Boardwalk in approximately
1937. They lived in Colusa in the Sacramento Valley and came to
Santa Cruz every summer to get away from the Valley heat.

Fourth of July, 1962
My family would make the trek from San Francisco every July 4 back in the early 60's to visit our relatives in Capitola. We used to light firecrackers in the old begonia fields near the Foster Freeze. We would walk down to Capitola Beach to watch the fireworks.
We always made a trip to the Beach Boardwalk and had a wonderful time on the roller coaster and the Wild Mouse ride! Now we live in Washington, but whenever we get the chance, I bring my own children to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. What a wonderful place!

Santa Cruz Memories, 1975
We have a hand-painted picture of the Boardwalk by a local painter and it brings back so many memories when i walk by it every day. We have been going to Santa Cruz for years and years, with our children and their children. I love to watch the sea lions underneath the pier, my husband loves to fish off the pier, while I go shopping. Thank-you Santa Cruz for all the memories.

Rowing Club Excursion, 1937
I am 73 years old and still get excited when I am leaving for Santa Cruz. I have been visiting since the late 30s with my parents, grandparents and with my family and pals.
Being a life member and historian of the "South End Rowing Club" of San Francisco I made a copy of this flyer which hangs on our club's wall. (Notice the schedule and prices for the Sun Tan Special - $1.25 Roundtrip from San Francisco to Santa Cruz, refreshments included.)

Senior Beach Day, 1984
The year was 1984 and it was Senior Beach Day. We drove over the hill from San Jose and it was a beautiful day. My teenage friends and I hit the beach, listening to Duran Duran and soaking up the sun.
I fondly remember the smell of candy apples and hot dog aromas floating through the air.
We decided to get on the Giant Dipper for a wild ride. To my amazement my bikini top came unravled and unbeknownst to me it came undone and flew off. The guys were laughing their heads off and I didn't know if I should laugh or cry but thank goodness someone had a tee shirt.

Life, 1993
I grew up in San Jose, so it was never too hard to get to the Boardwalk. I was taken there a lot by my family as a child and when I became a teenager it became a must on hot summer days. I'd hop on the Highway 17 bus from San Jose to Santa Cruz, ride the rides, go watch the harbor seals. I also took my boyfriend since he'd never gone. It has to have been one of the funnest days we've ever spent. Now we make it a point to go every summer! It has such a wonderful feel.
My father always tells me that he used to love going as a teenager as well.
