Boardwalk Memories, 1986
I moved to Santa Cruz in 1976 from Southern
California. I spent
many hours enjoying the Boardwalk as it was the closest thing to
Pacific Ocean Park and a reminder of home. This is a souvenir plate
I bought 20 years ago in a thrift store. The hand painted
and signed plate dates to the 20s and 30s when such items were very
popular. It is approximately 6 inches in diameter. I
just love it.

Every Weekend, 1993
Every weekend during the summer
my parents would take us to visit my Aunt and Uncle in San Jose. It
was the same routine every Saturday. My Uncle would ask me, "Where
do you want to go?" I
always chose to go to the Boardwalk. I loved walking the beach,
and my Uncle would take me on the rides. I miss the good old days!

Bandstand, 1944
When I was a very small child, my father played in the Coast Guard
Reserve Band on the old Boardwalk
bandstand.
My family spent almost every weekend during the summers between
1944 and 1950. My mother would pack a picnic lunch and we
would sit on the beach while the band played and then play in the
water and have our lunch. My first foray into the ocean was absolutely
terrifying to me. I was only about two and my father told
me to relax and he would pick me up before the waves broke over
me. I was so frightened that I hung onto his leg so tightly
I experienced my first taste of sea water.
I loved the Merry-Go-Round, but my older brother always managed
to grab a ring. I was always to short to get one. Very disappointing
to me.

Battle of the Bands, 1965
As a young musician, the Cocoanut Grove
was such an exciting venue to perform, the 60s at its best! Our group, the Caveliers,
took 2nd place to a local band 'Corny And the Corvettes'. Our band
enjoyed the beach during the day, and relished performing at the
Grove in the "cool" Santa Cruz evening hours.
