ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORK AND TRAVEL PROGRAM
Arrival
When do I arrive?
You can arrive in Santa Cruz as early as May 12, 2008.
All participants must arrive no later than June 30, 2008.
When will I find out what job I will
have?
When you arrive. Please be adaptable because your job will
be assigned to you according to the needs of the Boardwalk at
the time of your arrival. A short job description of available jobs is
listed on the Work and Travel Job
Descriptions page.
When will I start working?
Typically you will start working within 4 working days of your arrival.
Housing
Where are the Housing units located?
Across the street from the beach. You can literally walk a short
distance and put your feet in the sand and gaze out across
the Monterey Bay. Its a short five minute walk to work
at the Boardwalk.
What type of housing is it?
The units are apartment or cottage style and include: a full
kitchen with cooking and eating utensils, bathroom/showers,
beds and linens, dining room tables and chairs.
Is a security deposit required?
Yes, in order to hold a place for you in our summer program, a $120.00 security deposit must be received by May 1, 2008. We may no longer have a place for you if you miss the deadline. If you are unable to obtain a visa, your deposit will be returned to you.
How much does the housing cost per
week? Does it include utilities?
It is $60.00 per week. Yes, it includes water, garbage and electricity.
When you arrive you will be required to pay your first two weeks
rent: $120.00.
Is that in addition to the $120 security
deposit that I am sending now to reserve my space in the
work and travel program?
Yes. You will receive all of the security deposit minus $10.00
for cleaning supplies at the end of the work season when you
leave the apartment clean and without damage.
Will I have my own room?
No, you will share an apartment with one to four roommates depending
upon the size of the apartment.
Are there quiet hours on the housing
property?
Yes. They are from 10 PM to 8 AM. Please be courteous to your
sleeping neighbors.
Transportation
I will not have a car while in Santa
Cruz. Is that a problem?
No. You will be centrally located in Santa Cruz. Youll
live across from the beach and a 10 minute walk to the downtown
with its movie theaters, coffee shops, grocery stores,
and laundry facilities.
What about a day trip to San Francisco?
San Francisco is approximately a 90 minute drive by car. There
are a few car rental agencies within walking distance. There
are also public transportation buses available. Our Employee
Relations Coordinator offers a day trip to San Francisco during
the Summer.
Payment
How many hours a week will I work?
You will be guaranteed 32 hours per week. If you
elect to have a second job please remember that you must work
at the Boardwalk for at least 32 hours a week and that your
Boardwalk schedule must take priority over your second job.
Typically the shifts are 6 hours and you will work 5 to 6 days
per week. We cannot guarantee you will have a set schedule.
When do I get paid?
You will get paid every other Friday after 10:00 a.m. Be sure
to bring extra money for the days before your first check.
We recommend a minimum of $400.00.
What to Bring
What should I bring with me to Santa
Cruz?
Passport, JI Visa Work Permit, bath towels, sunglasses, hat,
a warm jacket, sweater, long pants, sweatpants, shorts, T-shirts,
swim suit, sunscreen lotion, sandals and a camera to record your
visit. You will also need solid colored tennis or sport shoes
and white, blue or black crew socks to wear while you are working.
Uniforms will be provided by the company.
Activities
How many employees are in the work and travel program?
Each summer we have approximately 130 employees in the program.
What kind of sporting activities are
available?
Youll be living very close to the beach where surfing,
bodyboarding and volleyball are available. There are also rollerblade
and bicycle trails along the cliffs and a great new skateboard
park near by. Equipment can be rented from shops down the street.
I would like two days off to go on
a trip. How do I arrange that?
All time off requests must be approved by your supervisor and
received at least 10 days in advance. Please plan on taking your
extended sightseeing trips after your last day of work on September
1, 2008.
Are there company sponsored events?
Yes. You will read our very own weekly publication The
Boardwalk Bulletin to stay informed of sponsored events.
And youll love the popular free special late night movie screenings where
popcorn, and soft drinks are all free. Sign up and be part of our annual
soccer tournament! Of course, as an employee, you
will always have the opportunity to go on the rides and play
miniature golf for free.
Departure
When is my last day of work?
You must commit to work through Monday, September 1, 2008. If
you leave the program early, you will not be invited back for
another season.
Does that mean I have to move out of
the apartment on
Tuesday, September 2?
No. Please be our guest for the big end of season party on September
2, 2008. Work and Travel employees must be completely moved out of
their apartment no later than Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 4:00
p.m. You will be checked out of your apartment between
the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. At that time if your apartment
is clean and in good order you will receive $110.00 back from
your $120.00 deposit. WE WILL NOT CHECK YOU OUT BEFORE 8:30 A.M.
OR AFTER 4:00 P.M.
