FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORK AND TRAVEL PROGRAM

Arrival

When do I arrive?
You can arrive in Santa Cruz as early as May 12, 2008.
All participants must arrive no later than June 30, 2008.

When will I find out what job I will have?
When you arrive. Please be adaptable because your job will be assigned to you according to the needs of the Boardwalk at the time of your arrival. A short job description of available jobs is listed on the Work and Travel Job Descriptions page.

When will I start working?
Typically you will start working within 4 working days of your arrival.

Housing

Where are the Housing units located?
Across the street from the beach. You can literally walk a short distance and put your feet in the sand and gaze out across the Monterey Bay. It’s a short five minute walk to work at the Boardwalk.

What type of housing is it?
The units are apartment or cottage style and include: a full kitchen with cooking and eating utensils, bathroom/showers, beds and linens, dining room tables and chairs.

Is a security deposit required?
Yes, in order to hold a place for you in our summer program, a $120.00 security deposit must be received by May 1, 2008. We may no longer have a place for you if you miss the deadline. If you are unable to obtain a visa, your deposit will be returned to you.

How much does the housing cost per week? Does it include utilities?
It is $60.00 per week. Yes, it includes water, garbage and electricity. When you arrive you will be required to pay your first two week’s rent: $120.00.

Is that in addition to the $120 security deposit that I am sending now to reserve my space in the work and travel program?
Yes. You will receive all of the security deposit minus $10.00 for cleaning supplies at the end of the work season when you leave the apartment clean and without damage.

Will I have my own room?
No, you will share an apartment with one to four roommates depending upon the size of the apartment.

Are there quiet hours on the housing property?
Yes. They are from 10 PM to 8 AM. Please be courteous to your sleeping neighbors.

Transportation

I will not have a car while in Santa Cruz. Is that a problem?
No. You will be centrally located in Santa Cruz. You’ll live across from the beach and a 10 minute walk to the downtown with it’s movie theaters, coffee shops, grocery stores, and laundry facilities.

What about a day trip to San Francisco?
San Francisco is approximately a 90 minute drive by car. There are a few car rental agencies within walking distance. There are also public transportation buses available. Our Employee Relations Coordinator offers a day trip to San Francisco during the Summer.

Payment

How many hours a week will I work?
You will be guaranteed 32 hours per week. If you elect to have a second job please remember that you must work at the Boardwalk for at least 32 hours a week and that your Boardwalk schedule must take priority over your second job. Typically the shifts are 6 hours and you will work 5 to 6 days per week. We cannot guarantee you will have a set schedule.

When do I get paid?
You will get paid every other Friday after 10:00 a.m. Be sure to bring extra money for the days before your first check. We recommend a minimum of $400.00.

What to Bring

What should I bring with me to Santa Cruz?
Passport, JI Visa Work Permit, bath towels, sunglasses, hat, a warm jacket, sweater, long pants, sweatpants, shorts, T-shirts, swim suit, sunscreen lotion, sandals and a camera to record your visit. You will also need solid colored tennis or sport shoes and white, blue or black crew socks to wear while you are working. Uniforms will be provided by the company.

Activities

How many employees are in the work and travel program?
Each summer we have approximately 130 employees in the program.

What kind of sporting activities are available?
You’ll be living very close to the beach where surfing, bodyboarding and volleyball are available. There are also rollerblade and bicycle trails along the cliffs and a great new skateboard park near by. Equipment can be rented from shops down the street.

I would like two days off to go on a trip. How do I arrange that?
All time off requests must be approved by your supervisor and received at least 10 days in advance. Please plan on taking your extended sightseeing trips after your last day of work on September 1, 2008.

Are there company sponsored events?
Yes. You will read our very own weekly publication “The Boardwalk Bulletin” to stay informed of sponsored events. And you’ll love the popular free special late night movie screenings where popcorn, and soft drinks are all free. Sign up and be part of our annual soccer tournament! Of course, as an employee, you will always have the opportunity to go on the rides and play miniature golf for free.

Departure

When is my last day of work?

Does that mean I have to move out of the apartment on
Tuesday, September 2?
