SANTA CRUZ, CA (January 11, 2010)– The Boardwalk was recently recognized by the State of California with a 2009 Waste Reduction Program (WRAP) Award. The award, sponsored by the California Waste Management Board, is given to California businesses for improving the environment by reducing waste.

The Boardwalk has received the WRAP award every year since 1995. The Boardwalk has also been named a “Clean Ocean Business” by the City of Santa Cruz every year since 2004.

The Boardwalk recycles approximately 180 tons of material every year including oil generated from vehicles and rides, green waste from landscaping, and electronic waste; the company reuses or recycles an estimated 100,000 pounds of cardboard annually; a water reclamation program reuses one million gallons of water annually for landscaping and other non-potable water applications; waterless urinals and low-flush toilets have been installed in most of the park’s public bathrooms; employees are encouraged to use alternative transportation with discount bus passes, bike and skateboard lockers, and other incentives. The Boardwalk was one of the first businesses in the region to voluntarily ban smoking, and to eliminate the use of polystyrene packaging in food services. The Boardwalk also purchased the first solar powered trash compactors in Northern California.
